Asphalt has been laid on Lord Street, Port Campbell, in time for the Christmas holidays.
Works on the town centre revitalisation will cease on Christmas Eve for the festive season break.
Contractors will return and commence finishing works from Monday 6 January 2025.
Cooriemungle Ward Councillor Jamie Vogels said two-way traffic was back on Cairns and Lord streets from tomorrow (Saturday 21 December).
“The town centre will be cleaned up before the Christmas break.
“Temporary fences and barriers will be removed where it is safe to do so to make it easier for residents and holiday visitors to get around over the holidays.
“Artificial grass has been put down on the western side of Lord Street as a temporary footpath and to keep the dust down.”
“The bitumen going down on Lord Street has been a massive step forward.
“It’s really gratifying to see most of the works coming to completion in time for the peak season.
“This will be welcomed by the traders who have been very patient. We appreciate things have been frustrating but the finished product will be a big improvement.”
About 4000 square metres of new lawns have been laid, three new drinking fountains with dog bowls have been installed and all car parking in Lord Street is marked in pavers instead of less durable paint.
Integrated artwork tiles by Dr Vicki Couzens have been installed that tell stories about the local fauna and seaside location.
Dr Couzens was chosen from 19 artists to design art work spanning the town centre redesign. A Keerray Wooroong woman, her family oral history speaks of cultural connection, belonging and history with Port Campbell.
The local Historical Society, GORCAPA and Parks Victoria have restored the historical Rocket Shed and GORCAPA has repaired the seawall after the 1-in100-years storm last September.
Cr Vogels said finishing works on the town centre project would start on 6 January.
“There is some paving to be done outside The Alcove and Real Pizza Pasta & Salads.
“The deck footings are in place under the Norfolk Island pines. The decking is being manufactured off-site. That will be installed in the new year.”
The Port Campbell Town Centre Project is funded by $6 M from the State Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund and $5.6 M from the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, with the balance from Council.
