Port Campbell revitalisation project update August

A project manager will oversee the first four small parts of the Port Campbell Town Centre Revitalisation Project after a second tender process received no suitable submissions.

The smaller jobs, which are all part of the 2022 works package, recently advertised include:

• New parking and plantings in Tregea Street
• Zebra crossing in Tregea Street which will provide a safe pedestrian crossing point in front of the Sow & Piglets linking the caravan park
• New footpath in Morris Street to link back to the northern end of Lord Street
• Calming measures in Morris Street for traffic approaching Lord Street

Corangamite Shire Coastal Ward Councillor Jamie Vogels said Council received one tender and some elements came in at a high cost that didn’t give best value for money.

“We had planned to start works on Tregea Street, Morris Street and Great Ocean Road roundabout this month,” Cr Vogels said.

“Unfortunately we haven’t had any luck securing a contractor so we’ve had to re-think how to kick-start the project. Given labour and material shortages due to COVID outbreaks and the high level of construction across the state, Council is exploring other options.

“This sees Council’s recently appointed project manager, Aaron Huttig overseeing some smaller sections of works with individual contractors to ensure some works commence in 2022.

“This work includes new parking areas, plantings, footpaths and traffic calming measures in Tregea and Morris Street.

“Converting the top roundabout on the Great Ocean Road to a sweeping right-hand turn into Morris Street will no longer be a top priority with further work around alternative treatments for this part of the project to be explored with Regional Roads Victoria, who are the responsible authority for this section of road. 

Cr Vogels added some further consultation is planned for late August to finalise some aspects of the works scheduled for 2023.

“We will do more consultation around parking in front of Port Campbell Shopping and Dr Vicki Couzens is keen to meet with the community further before finalising her integrated public art works,” he said.

Residents will be able to view plans for the options at the former Alcove Cafe at 34 Lord Street on 25 and 26 August, or at portcampbelltowncentre.com.au

Council will open a site office at that address in coming weeks.

The project is funded $6 million from the State Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund and $5.6 million from the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund with the balance from Council.
